Ballack says Germany must improve to seal World Cup spot

Published by under Uncategorized

.

Captain of the national football team Michael Ballack says Germany need to raise their game if they are to seal qualification for next years World Cup in South Africa.

Ballacks call to arms on Monday comes just over five weeks before the Euro 2008 finalists face Russia in a pivotal Group 4 qualifier in Moscow. . First of all we have to qualify, but if we make it through Germany will be one of the favourites based on our commitment and our good organisation which compensate for certain weak spots - thats how we reached the final at Euro 2008.

We have to singularly improve our level of play if we want to be a candidate at the World Cup, the Chelsea midfielder told German news agency SID.

Before Russia Germany face Azerbaijan in their next qualifier on September 9 with a friendly against 2010 hosts South Africa on Saturday.

But looking ahead to the Russia game Ballack said Germany was far away from it previous form.

We have to play two good games to show that our top spot ahead of Russia is justified, added the Germany captain who went on to regret that none of his teammates played for other major European sides. Germany didnt become world champions in 1990 by chance, seven of that side were playing in Italy, he said.

It would be good if other Germany players could find their way to playing for big European sides.

Tempelhof to become enormous city park

Published by under Uncategorized

.

The airfield of Berlins historic Tempelhof airport will become the German capitals largest park by the summer of 2010, city officials announced on Monday. .

As of Tuesday, Berlin will be sole owner of the park after purchasing the federal governments share for 35 million, Junge-Reyer said.

With an area of 230 hectares, the airfield park that straddles both the Kreuzberg and Neuklln districts will be significantly larger than Berlins famous Tiergarten park. Another 1. The city plans to spend a further 60 million over the next seven years to develop the open space.

Once the new park opens, the six-kilometre fence surrounding the former airfield will remain and authorities will close five entrance points each night.6 million per year will go to park maintenance and security. It is most famous as the West Berlin airport where Allied pilots continuously brought supplies into the city in 1948-49 as the Soviets tried to starve the city into submission during the Berlin Airlift.

Tempelhof, built in 1923, operated until October 2008 when dwindling passenger numbers led to the closure of the facility.

The 1936 Nazi-era terminal which is more than one kilometre in length will continue to be rented out for cultural exhibitions such as the fashion expo Bread Butter.

Merkel brushes aside campaign critics

Published by under General

.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel brushed aside calls on Monday from within her own party to pull off the gloves in her battle for re-election in four weeks after strong setbacks in state polls.

Merkel hit back at critics who said her above-the-fray campaign style bore part of the blame for the conservatives losses in three regional elections held Sunday, which saw them likely to lose control of two states.

She said the races had no bearing on the September 27 poll, insisting that voters saw her conservatives and their favoured coalition partners, the pro-business Free Democrats, as best-placed to lead Germany out of a steep economic downturn.

It is clear that there is no reason to change anything at all about our strategy.

We all agree that in light of the crisis, the issues are economic growth and jobs, she told reporters after talks with leaders of her Christian Democrats CDU when asked about the internal criticism.

Merkels CDU enjoys a double-digit lead in the polls over the rival Social Democrats SPD, junior partners in her unwieldy right-left grand coalition. We are absolutely on the right course. Most pollsters say she is virtually assured of a second term.

Although the SPD failed to make major gains, a jubilant Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Merkels SPD challenger, saw her poor showing as a sign the centre-left still had a shot of snatching the chancellery from her. But her chances of ditching the SPD after the general election in favour of the Free Democrats appeared to narrow with Sundays results.

The poll reversals so close to the election spooked many conservatives.

One thing is sure - this country does not want black-yellow, he said, referring to the party colours for the CDU and the Free Democrats.

After an until-now sober and unpolitical election campaign, it is time for some more emotion, he said, adding his voice to a chorus of complaints. Philipp Missfelder, a member of the CDUs board, urged Merkel to abandon her cool campaign style and show a bit more passion.

Although the Free Democrats boosted their score in Sundays polls, their general secretary Dirk Niebel also appeared nervous that the centre-right camps strong lead would fizzle.

Although the Free Democrats boosted their score in Sundays polls, their general secretary Dirk Niebel also appeared nervous that the centre-right camps strong lead would fizzle. And in the previous election in 2002, the CDU unexpectedly lost outright to the SPD, allowing it to continue its coalition with the Greens.

In the 2005 general election, the CDU squandered a sizeable lead to finish just ahead of the SPD, which forced it to form the current awkward right-left government.

Political scientist Jurgen Falter of the University of Mainz in western Germany said the regional elections pointed to doubts about Merkels preferred centre-right alliance.

Those defeats haunt the conservatives, making even Merkels most ardent supporters skittish. .

This option was always in danger and still is in danger, he told the daily Thuringer Allgemeine, predicting a close national race.

However, smaller parties profited from the conservatives losses far more than the SPD, which posted slight gains in Thuringia and Saxony and a steep drop in support in Saarland.

And in what the mass-market daily Bild called a debacle for the CDU, it appeared to lose control of the legislatures of both neighbouring Thuringia and Saarland on the French border.

.

But in Saarland at least, the SPD will likely be able to form a ruling coalition with the Greens and the socialist outfit The Left, a relatively new party made up of disaffected Social Democrats and former East German communists
