Bionade, which has sales of 70 million a year, is considered one of the pioneering firms in the manufacture of organic and healthy soft drinks. Its official German beer is very good

Published by under Uncategorized

.

Despite falling consumption, those who are still enjoying Germanys beer can know that its been given top marks from the national consumer watchdog association.
ADVERTISING

Daily newspaper Bild reported that ko-test looked at flavour and ingredients of all its samples in the grading process, and 44 of the 46 beers were graded very good.

Those suffering from the recession will delight in knowing that even the cheap beers were graded well, such as the Original Oettinger and Sternburg Pilsener, which cost only 40 cents per litre. The Ayinger Jahrhundert-Bier and Pinkus Special - both of which can only be found regionally - were the gold stars of the group.

When it came to pure taste, 38 beers were given top marks.

Beer lovers can also rejoice in knowing German brewers are putting the best ingredients in their beer. Only one beer, the Wickuler Pilsner, was put in the satisfactory category the lowest mark available in ko-tests food and beverage rankings. All but one beer, which had an incorrect alcohol percentage on the label, were given the very good score in the ingredients category.

Consumers can see the full results for all 46 test subjects in Augusts ko-test magazine.

The study concluded that there was little difference in quality between regional brands and internationally known brands like Becks, Bild reported.

.

The positive ratings come despite Thursdays report from the Federal Statistics Office Destatis, which showed a drop in beer sales for the first six months of 2009 to their lowest level since records began in 1991

Berlins S-bahn chaos opens new canvas to grafffiti artists

Published by under audiobooks

.

Berlins S-Bahn chaos has created a Cockaigne for graffiti artists as the lack of rail traffic opens up a whole new canvas for taggers, daily Der Tagesspiegel reported on Wednesday.
ADVERTISING

In the month since the citys rapid transit system has been running at reduced capacity, police have issued 400 graffiti-related citations, the paper reported.

In response to the colourful problem, S-Bahn operator Deutsche Bahn DB and police have increased security around the empty platforms and tracks throughout the city. While an increase in graffiti artists are usually expected during school holidays, the deserted train tracks of the S-Bahn have exacerbated the problem for police and rail officials.

But with all the extra attention at night, artists are finding the light of day the best time to leave their mark, the paper said. Lines servicing more suburban parts of the city are supervised with helicopters at night while track beds are watched by thermal-imaging cameras.

Another man was also caught at the Westkreuz station tagging a train at 5 pm on Thursday, the paper said. On Wednesday, two children in the community of Zehlendorf were caught by police with spray paint in hand at 620 pm, having already used two entire train cars as their canvas. Many lines are still electrified and create a shock risk.

Officials are also warning of the dangers that come with exploring the rails. Every year, 15,000 new graffiti paintings appear on Berlins surfaces, making it a destination for street artists worldwide.

Police expect a flood of new tags next week when a Friedrichshain-district hip-hop festival will attract more artists with a graffiti contest. DB, the national rail service provider, was ordered to conduct wheel repairs on 930 of the train cars by the national rail watchdog EBA. . DB brought train cars in from Stuttgart and Munich to service some of the suburban lines, but because passengers were unaware of the trains running there, most remained empty.

Most of the routes are to come back in service at reduced capacity by Monday, August 3, with most train lines running every 20 minutes.

Eurofighter planes get set for takeoff in Munich

Published by under audiobooks

.

Germany and three other European countries have signed a contract for the delivery of 112 Eurofighter aircraft worth around 9 billion 13 billion, the defence ministry said on Friday.

The consortium, which included Britain, Italy and Spain, finally inked the deal in Munich, bringing to an end a long delay as countries hesitated to splash out on military hardware in the midst of a crippling recession.

The procurement volume amounts to approximately nine billion euros, the statement added.

NATO Eurofighter and Tornade Development, Production and Logistics Agency NETMA today signed a contract for the delivery of 112 Eurofighter aircraft in the name of the partner countries Britain, Germany, Italy and Spain, the ministry said in a statement.

The four partner countries in the consortium divided up work on the plane in 1998 according to the number of aircraft each planned to buy, with a total of 620 orders booked in three stages through to 2017.

The Eurofighter is a multi-purpose combat jet developed by a European consortium comprised of the aerospace group EADS, BAE Systems of Britain and the Italian group AleniaFinmeccanica. .

The project, however, has been dogged by concerns over production delays and budget overruns, with each plane reported to cost in the region of 100 million.

Nevertheless, with the deal inked, the German defence ministry said the programme would not only secure thousands of highly qualified jobs in the European aviation industry but also improve the export chances of the eurofighter.

Raising doubts about the future viability of the project, Britain also threatened to pull out over concerns over a four-year delay in production.

Squabbling neo-Nazis set for election drubbing

Published by under General, audiobooks

.

Neo-Nazi political parties are likely to go backwards in Germanys upcoming elections as internal strife and growing tribalism in the far-right scene leaves their support in tatters, the domestic intelligence agency said on Friday.
ADVERTISING

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitutions BfV Brandenburg and Saxony Anhalt branches believe the neo-Nazi National Democratic Party NPD and the German Peoples Union DVU have squandered support they built up at previous elections.

Under the electoral pact, the parties had agreed not to run candidates against one another.

At the Potsdam launch of a campaign against right-wing extremism, Winfriede Schreiber, head of the Brandenburg branch, said the dissolution of the Germany pact between the parties had clearly weakened the far-right camp.

Volker Limburg, head of the Saxony-Anhalt office, said right-wing extremists in his state had failed to build the cross-state networks necessary to fight in Septembers federal and state elections. Its dissolution means the parties are likely to split the far-right vote.

The NPD has been relying on using loosely organised neo-nazi gangs to build local support, he said.

The trend within the scene is moving towards more isolated and regional right-wing extremist groups, he said.

The NPD now holds seats in the state parliaments of Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania but the DVU holds none.

The prediction follows fears of rising neo-Nazi violence, with recent figures showing a 30 percent rise last year in far-right crime.

The far-right scene has had only limited success recruiting new members, the BfV said. Neither party has won the necessary 5 percent federally to gain a seat in the Bundestag, the lower house of parliament.

The number of autonomous far-right supporters dwindled from 270 to 240. In Saxony-Anhalt, the number of party members sank in the past year from 350 to 280.

The NPD and, in particular, its youth wing, the Junge Nationaldemokraten are increasingly dominated by neo-nazis, Limburg said. In Brandenburg, however, the NPD managed to attract 50 new members to grow to 300.

Furthermore, the Organisation of Neo-Nazis in Comradeship, which represented autonomous nationalists, seems largely to have broken up. Senior party officials move freely between the party structure and the neo-nazi scene. Cross-state cooperation was rare if it happened at all.

In its place, loosely connected organisations have cropped up, mostly on the internet, Schreiber said. They often use concerts as meeting points, he added.

Currently there are 25 far-right groups in Brandenburg and 16 in Saxony-Anhalt.
